The Art of Being Real

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Matthew 6:1

I love organizing, and I love Jesus even more. But I hope that you don’t read any of my stuff and think, Well, Little Miss Organized certainly has it all together.

I really don’t have it all together. In all of my writing and speaking, I try to be super transparent, letting you know that I struggle with intentionally living for Christ just as much as the next person, if not more. I need His grace.

But it sure can be tempting to try to impress…

Here are a few true confessions:

How to Encourage Loving Tones in Your Home

“You’re being a clanging cymbal.”

This is our new family phrase.

As part of the research for my free Guide to a Vibrant Family Faith, I challenged our family to try verse mapping together. When you “map” a verse, you define words simply, circle words and phrases that stand out to you, and personalize the verse by crossing out any pronouns and adding your name.

Leaning on Spiderwebs

What they trust in is fragile; what they rely on is a spider’s web.

They lean on the web, but it gives way; they cling to it, but it does not hold.

Job 8:14-15

After reading Job 8, I decided to do an object lesson with my kids. (Fellow moms, grandmas, Sunday School teachers, try this one out this Halloween! You can make every holiday—even  Halloween—about Jesus!)

Don’t Underestimate Your Phone Alarm

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill.

Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming.

It is close at hand…

Joel 2:1

This summer, my teen son wanted to pursue a goal. He made a great plan and decided to work on it for 15 minutes each day.

I wanted to encourage him, so I offered to help him set up some reminders. “Do you want me to print out a calendar so you can mark off each day?” I asked hopefully. “Or would you like me to buy you a little planner so you can keep track of what you’ve done? Do you want to start the process today?”

“Mom, it’s done,” he said.

It’s Not Easy Being Queen

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Ephesians 5:33

I hate to admit it, but I’m a bigger fan of historical fiction than I am of actual history books. I love to read about Tudor-era women fighting for better marriages and higher positions and more power… even the chance to be queen. But when they get to be queen, they’re still not happy: they know they’re not the king.

We Christian women are the queens of our households, and we love it—but we know we’re not the kings. Although our homes are our dominions, the Bible clearly says that our husbands are the leaders of them.

It’s a challenge to be in charge of the home and yet not be the leader of the family. (Even if you’re feeling skeptical here, please keep reading… it will be worth it.)

What’s Your Why

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:17

I recently saw a meme (from the wonderful Michael Hyatt) asking, “What is your why?”  On the very same day, I received a short email from a fellow organizer that said simply this:

“Seems very odd that you focus mostly on Christian audiences. I’m not a Christian.

Seems like you would lose out on a lot of people who are not Christian.”

In other words, “Why are you doing what you’re doing?”

Taking A Risk

“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

Matthew 14:29

A couple of weeks ago, I got a hair cut. I asked the hairdresser to take off at about eight inches of long layers in favor of a shoulder-length blunt cut.

This was a stupidly huge deal for me.

Organizing Your Summer

A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God.

Ecclesiastes 2:24

Every summer for the last several years, I’ve organized a “summer initiative” for my kids. My kids look forward to these ideas every year (mostly because they involve fun treats). This year, I want to share my idea with you.

Will You Invite Them In?

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

John 10:10

As I speak and write, I hear people make many statements about organizing—and often they’re the same things over and over. This is one of the most common:

“My house is such a mess I could never have anyone over.”

This breaks my heart. I address this very comment in my talk about party organization (Christian Hostessing). Basically, I share my opinion that:

  1. The people who love us don’t care what our house looks like.
  2. The people who are critically judging our homemaking skills… well, they probably need to get closer to Jesus, so we need to invite them on in and share our faith!

Spiritual Conditioning

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27

My “big present” last Christmas, the gift my husband and kids chipped in to get me, was a Natural Daylight Alarm Clock.  (If you’re not familiar with these, they are cool.*)

This clock is really helping me get up in the morning, something I’m not so good at doing! The box said that it works with your body’s natural rhythms, and I think it truly does. The light slowly gets brighter and brighter until my alarm “goes off” with the sounds of chirping birds. I didn’t think the birds would be enough to wake me (I’m the kind of person who incorporates the song playing on a radio alarm into my dreams), but the light has me all primed to wake up and my eyes open at the first little chirp.

When I wake up to the warm light and the sound of birds chirping, I feel like Cinderella.
