The Best Resolution

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

-Luke 6:38

Have you ever dropped the ball on a friendship? A friend asks to spend time with you, but you forget to return their email. Their texts go unanswered. Soon they stop reaching out to you, and then it feels almost embarrassing to reach out to them…

Because Your Momma Said So!

Read it! John 2

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

(vs4&5)

Think it through

I’ve always been a fascinated by this little exchange.

In modern times, for Jesus to start with “Woman!” seems a bit funny. And then Mary totally ignores his protests and assumes he’ll do it anyway, because she said so.

Let’s Start Building Your House!

Way back in 2011, I realized that I’d written a mammoth book about how to organize life as a Christian.

I’d followed God’s clear call to “Write the Book” by writing all about personal, home, and family organizing for Jesus—and it was too much for one book! So I took the first half of the manuscript, added a conclusion, and called it Organizing You. That was the easy part.

The hard part was cutting out the second half of my dearly loved and prayed over content. I pasted it into a Word doc and saved it as “OY2.” But in my head, it was called “OY2??” I doubted whether anyone would ever read it.

Even now, it’s hard for me to believe that I’m able to share that content (and more!) with you in Building Your House!

Chocolate is My Third Favorite Thing

#1  Jesus

#2  Family

#3  Chocolate

I suppose the real #3 is my church, or the Bible… but aren’t those really lumped in there with Jesus?  See #1.

Just so you can get to know me a little better, here are ten things you may not know about me.  Yes, this post is purely for fun—but it still has a Bible Verse at the end!  (The girl can’t help it.)

Victory is Ours

It’s been raining in Ohio for weeks. If you live here, you know. If you don’t, well, I’ll just say that I’m not sure if there was more than one day in June that it didn’t rain and July has been almost as bad.

Being an “inside girl,” I really don’t mind rain…but things are getting pretty soggy, even for me. And my fellow Ohioans have been getting a little fussy about it. My positive rejoinder, “Well, at least we’re really using our bowling pass!” is starting to wear thin.

Last week there was a day with absolutely no chance of rain in the forecast. I’d been avoiding errands, so I hopped in my car and headed straight to Michaels (my favorite store—crafts!). I pulled into a parking spot, gathered up my coupons, and then spotted the umbrella that had taken up permanent residency in my purse. As I happily removed it, I prayed, “Thank you, God, for this beautiful sunny day!”

Immediately my heart swelled with a larger-than-life word, a sudden understanding:

God’s Circle of Protection—Get on in

Read it! James 1:19-27

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

(vs 22-24)

Think it through

How could I make a scripture scrapbook for the kids without including the Ten Commandments?

And how could I write a blog post about it without realizing how hard it can be to keep some of them? It’s hard to tell the truth all the time. Not coveting is a challenge. It’s even hard to rest on the Sabbath.

Way Better than a “Like”

Read it! Ruth 4:1-12

Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.

(vs2)

Think it through

Boaz was such a fantastic, up-and-up man. Not only does he approach the next man in line for a prize he would like to claim for himself, he does it in the presence of ten witnesses. These men bore witness to the offer, the refusal, the passing of the sandal (another little weird-ism in this story that I love!), and Boaz’s legal redemption of Ruth.

Wouldn’t You Know It?

Read it! Ruth 2:1-13

So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters.

As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz,

Who was from the clan of Elimelech.

(vs3)

Think it through

As it turned out…

It just so happened…

And wouldn’t you know…

God is so often a part of this type of phrase. Can you see Him in Ruth’s story?

What a Character!

Read it! Ruth 1

At this they wept again.

Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.

Vs 14

Think it through

When I’ve read Ruth in the past, I’ve tended to focus on, well, Ruth. But today it’s Naomi who’s calling for my attention, speaking to my heart.

Naomi has never been my favorite person. Her protestations that her daughters-in-law should turn back after they’d already left (could she not have mentioned this earlier?), combined with her self-imposed name change in verse 20, seem like attention-seeking and nearly manipulative behavior to me. But maybe I’ve been reading Naomi all wrong.

The Very Fine Line Between Two C’s

Read it! Amos 6

You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions,

But you do not grieve over the ruins of Joseph.

(vs 6)

Think it through

God calls out in the first verse of this reading, “Woe to you who are complacent in Zion!” Amos goes on to describe people enjoying their rich blessings, taking personal credit for their successes, and ignoring the things of God. They are complacent.
