A Heart for Missions is Too Full For Guilt

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Mark 10:21

Recently as I was preparing to leave for a mission trip, my spirit became deeply cluttered.

Just thinking about it was causing me a lot of worry and pre-guilt. Would I be able to handle being with children in extreme poverty, often with physical and/or mental disabilities? Several people with much more mission experience than I warned me that I would be heartsick, broken, and overwhelmed with my own underserved blessings.

So, I prayed, and I fasted, and then I went to Jamaica—not the touristy part.

Real Random Acts of Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness are here to stay, and that’s a good, good thing.

There are movies about them. There are books about them. Just type “random acts of kindness ideas” into Pinterest and you’ll see what I mean!

What’s interesting to me is that the whole RAK movement as been largely secularly based. So many people out there are looking for ways to show love, receive love, and focus on love in their lives… and that’s great.

I’m All Shook Up

Read it! Amos 9

For I will give the command and I will shake the house of Israel among all

the nations as grain is shaken in a sieve, and not a pebble will reach the ground.

All the sinners among my people will die by the sword,

all those who say, “Disaster will not overtake or meet us.”

(vs 9&10)

Think it through

How God hates sin. He really loathes it, despises it. Amos takes the first six verses of Chapter 9 to describe how not one of the Israelites would escape His wrath. Their physical death would reflect their spiritual one.

What’s Your Holy Spirit Specialty?

Read it! Acts 16

During the night Paul had a vision

of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him,

“Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision,

we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia,

concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

(vs 9&10)

Think it through

Acts 16 is a study of where Paul goes… and doesn’t go. He goes to Derbe and Lystra, Phrygia and Galatia, but the Holy Spirit kept him out of Asia. His group tries to enter Bithynia but “the Spirit of Jesus wouldn’t allow them to.” (I would love to know more about that! What was that like, to be blocked by the Spirit of Jesus?) Paul doesn’t leave a jail cell when released by an earthquake, nor does he leave the jailer’s home when released by the magistrates. But the last words of Acts 16 are, “Then they left”!
