Way back when I started this series, a reader recommended that I create a Marriage Album in the As They Grow format. I loved the idea and started looking for pictures of Travis and me, just one for each year.
During my first appointment with a psychiatrist, back when I was struggling with a postpartum anxiety disorder, my doctor asked me an interesting question.
He’d begun the appointment by asking me to describe myself. I told him about my different personality traits, ending with a slightly shameful admittance that I was quite organized and very Type-A. (Remember, this was years before I had written or spoken a single word for this ministry.)
Looking down as he wrote his notes, he asked, “Do you like that about yourself?”
This fact may not be particularly unexpected, especially if you’ve read my books: I don’t like cooking.
So, I may not be the very best person to write about unexpected organizing in the kitchen. But, as always, I’ll show you what I do and challenge you to think about what you do. Perfection has never been the point of these posts, anyway. (Whew!)

Today’s Unexpected Organizing idea comes in the form of shelving.
Today I’m launching a new blog series called “Unexpected Organizing.” I’m so excited! I’m going to open up my home to you in a very real way—with photos of how my house is actually organized. The good, the bad, and the not necessarily Pinterest Pretty.
I always want to be real with you. I want to show you that you don’t have to organize perfectly—you just have to organize in a way that works for you and your family. Let me be clear that I don’t think you should organize just like me! But I’m excited to share some ideas with you, ideas that may help you to clear the spiritual clutter out of your home.

“Shoe” was my first word. The story goes that I didn’t talk for a long time and my parents were starting to get a bit nervous. Then one day on the changing table, my mom was putting shoes on my little feet. I pointed at one and said, clear as a bell, “shoe.” Seeing Mom’s delight, I went on to point out “sock,” and then “foot”… and basically they haven’t gotten me to stop talking since.
Note that “shoe” started the avalanche.
I do love shoes, but when I clean out my wardrobe, they’re often a neglected section. By the time I’m done with the clothes, I don’t have much energy for the shoes…. and then they all start looking like keepers. Been there?
I’ve been in a season where I’ve been giving my Time Management Talk, “Where is Your Time Going?” I dearly love the “ah-ha!” looks I see out in the audience as women realize they can manage their time with Jesus and for Him. Time management has to be my favorite kind of organization!
But as I was speaking, something was niggling at me… an idea that’s been in the back of my mind for a while. As I try to manage my time, am I working with all of the facts? Do we know how long it really takes to do the things that we regularly do?
We all constantly, and without truly thinking about it, estimate the time it will take to our daily tasks and plan accordingly. Estimation is a great tool and often a time saver.
One of the top New Year’s resolutions on every Christian’s list is to spend more time with God. We want to improve the quantity or the quality of our devotional time—or both!
I know it’s one of my top resolutions every year… and it will be until I die. We can never spend too much time with God, or focus on Him too closely! But we can (and should) feel satisfied after our devotional time with Him. We should feel full of His peace and presence, and ready to tackle what’s next.
Of course, our enemy wants to pull us away from any close time with God. He throws anything he can in our way… especially those whirling negative thoughts that I call Spiritual Clutter. Unfortunately for him, we can use a little organization to clear out the mess in our heads and make room for God’s peace.
