An Example of What Not to Do

Read it!: Amos 4

“Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,

and because I will do this to you, Israel, prepare to meet your God.”

(vs 12)

 Think it through:

This Israelites had all kinds of warnings and consequences to their actions. Amos lists them in all in Chapter 4, and then he tells them what’s coming. He truly was a prophet, a man who had the word of God to speak and spoke it, apparently without hesitation.

The Israelites didn’t listen.

Those crazy Israelites are like Papa Bear in the old Stan and Jan Berenstian book The Bike Lesson. After every disaster, he says, “This is something you should NOT do.”

I shake my head at the Israelites, but am I making the same mistakes? What prophet or person of God is speaking to me today, and yet I’m not listening? What consequences am I ignoring? I need to keep my mind and heart open to the things I’m hearing in church, on Christian radio, from other believers, and in my readings.

And of course, working hard to understand God’s Holy Word will keep my heart discerning as I listen to the messages of others!

Live it like you mean it:

Are you doing your best to surround yourself with the heart of God? Do you frequently listen to Christian music, or take the time to prepare your heart for the coming weekend’s sermon at church? Choose one thing you can do this week to seek the heart of God.

This week, I’m going to listen to Christian music only and start a new book on prayer.

Lift it up:

Lord, thank You for the wisdom you share through Godly men and women today and through the ages. I want to keep my heart open to listen to Your words, no matter where they come from. Please help me to continually listen for You. Amen.

Tell Me About It:

Tell me you’re the one thing you’re going to do this week to seek the heart of God—I might even join you!
