Housewalk One-Sheet

For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

Hebrews 3:4

What is a Housewalk? Well, I made it up.  That’s part of the fun of being an author!

(True story: I was on Pinterest recently and saw a pin about a “Housewalk.”  I thought, Wait, is that a thing? I thought I made it up!  So I clicked on the pin.  Turns out, deep in the blog post, the writer actually mentioned getting the idea from Building Your House.  So yup, I did make it up!)

My second book, Building Your House, culminates in a Housewalk with Jesus.  Essentially, you walk through your home, praying over each room and discerning the spiritual clutter you have about that room (the ways the room is bothering you).  You then use your insights to organize your home in a way that really suits you.  A Housewalk is absolutely the best way to clear spiritual clutter out of your home.

Fighting the Post-Project Blues

The righteous person may have many troubles,
but the Lord delivers him from them all.

Psalm 34:19

Have you ever had the post-project blues?

Perhaps you dedicated an entire Saturday to organizing your kitchen—and you did a great job!—but on Monday morning you’re back to business as usual and your kitchen doesn’t seem so great anymore.

Maybe you had a day where you nailed your to-do list.  You were firing on all cylinders, making checkmark after checkmark.  You posted on social media about your accomplishments, garnering tons of likes and “You go!” comments.  But the next day, you’ve got a new list, and you can barely get up the energy to tackle the first item.

Organize Your Photos: Marriage Album

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

John 15:12

Here’s a bonus post for the Organizing Your Photos Series!

Way back when I started this series, a reader recommended that I create a Marriage Album in the As They Grow format.  I loved the idea and started looking for pictures of Travis and me, just one for each year.

How God Created You to Complete Your Goals

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13

During my first appointment with a psychiatrist, back when I was struggling with a postpartum anxiety disorder, my doctor asked me an interesting question.

He’d begun the appointment by asking me to describe myself.  I told him about my different personality traits, ending with a slightly shameful admittance that I was quite organized and very Type-A.  (Remember, this was years before I had written or spoken a single word for this ministry.)

Looking down as he wrote his notes, he asked, “Do you like that about yourself?”

Unexpected Organizing in the Kitchen

This fact may not be particularly unexpected, especially if you’ve read my books: I don’t like cooking.

So, I may not be the very best person to write about unexpected organizing in the kitchen. But, as always, I’ll show you what I do and challenge you to think about what you do. Perfection has never been the point of these posts, anyway. (Whew!)

Unexpected Organizing: Hidden Shelving

Welcome to the second post in my Unexpected Organizing series! If you missed the post about bedroom furniture everywhere, please do check it out.

Reminder: I’m being super real with you, letting you in on how I do things around my home with photos that may not be “Pinterest Pretty.” And again, let me be clear that I don’t think you should organize just like me! I want to show you that you don’t have to organize “perfectly”—you just have to organize in a way that works for you and your family. I’m excited to share some ideas that may help you to clear some spiritual clutter out of your home.

Today’s Unexpected Organizing idea comes in the form of shelving.

Unexpected Organizing: Bedroom Furniture

Today I’m launching a new blog series called “Unexpected Organizing.” I’m so excited! I’m going to open up my home to you in a very real way—with photos of how my house is actually organized. The good, the bad, and the not necessarily Pinterest Pretty.

I always want to be real with you. I want to show you that you don’t have to organize perfectly—you just have to organize in a way that works for you and your family. Let me be clear that I don’t think you should organize just like me! But I’m excited to share some ideas with you, ideas that may help you to clear the spiritual clutter out of your home.

The Blessing of Limitations

He brought me out to a spacious place;
He rescued me because He delighted in me.

Psalm 18:19

Whether you live in a tiny apartment or a 10-bedroom home, your space is limited.

We all have “limited space”—and that can be such a good thing!

As a society, we have a tendency to collect, and a propensity toward wanting more. We tend to accumulate (and accumulate) until we’re seeking new and better ways to store our stuff.

Beyond the Packing List

Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. Take your brother also and go back to the man at once. And may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

Genesis 43:11-14

I loved reading these verses in Genesis 43 this week, as I plan for a vacation. How appropriate!  These verses describe Jacob (Israel) telling his sons how to prepare for a dangerous trip to Egypt.

And why did these verses resonate with me so much? Because they are my trip-organizing philosophy in a Bible passage. This is what Jacob is basically advising:

The Shoe-Lover’s Guide to Organizing

“…and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”

From the Armor of God verses, Ephesians 6:10-18

I love shoes.

“Shoe” was my first word. The story goes that I didn’t talk for a long time and my parents were starting to get a bit nervous. Then one day on the changing table, my mom was putting shoes on my little feet. I pointed at one and said, clear as a bell, “shoe.” Seeing Mom’s delight, I went on to point out “sock,” and then “foot”… and basically they haven’t gotten me to stop talking since.

Note that “shoe” started the avalanche.

I do love shoes, but when I clean out my wardrobe, they’re often a neglected section. By the time I’m done with the clothes, I don’t have much energy for the shoes…. and then they all start looking like keepers. Been there?
