Read it! I Samuel 16
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Think it through
So let’s kick off this series with one of my favorite verses from David’s part in God’s story, I Samuel 16:7. This verse reminds us that God knows us, inside and out. When He looks at you and me, He sees the special and unique children He created.
Today, though, this verse is calling out to me about the way I look at things. I’m too often “man,” focusing on outward appearance. Not as much with individuals, but when I look at the “successes” or “failures” of my efforts to be the woman God has called me to be.
I tend to view the bigger, farther away speaking gigs as more important, but God sees the smaller groups as just as significant. I look at a month with fewer book sales and see something that needs improved; God sees each woman who’s read my book as a precious daughter who’s moved one step closer to Him (at least that’s my prayer!). I review my list of requested OY Bible study guides and Time Management videos and wonder if any of them are actually happening; God sees exactly how His will is being fulfilled through my efforts.
Live it like you mean it
Do you find yourself judging your success as a servant of God by the worldly standards of numbers and outcome? What results have you discouraged at work, at home, or in your ministry efforts?
Take a moment to look at the heart of your efforts and see God working there. Write down at least three intangible results of your work for the Lord and post them on your fridge for one week. When you see them, be thankful!
We wait with patience and hope for the eyes of Heaven. Someday we’ll really see just how much He has done with our efforts!
Lift it up
Lord, thank You so much for the ministry You’ve given me. I want to give You my whole-hearted effort, not for compliments or successes or monetary gain, but because serving You is good and right. Please help me to be filled up purely with the joy of following Your call. I love you, Lord. Amen.
Tell Me About It
Tell me about what God has done with your efforts on His behalf! Let’s encourage one another to rejoice in what God sees!
